Making Pigment Tutorial

Making Pigment Tutorial

$20.00

Never waste another leftover dye bath again! In this tutorial you’ll learn how to make concentrated natural dye pigment that has a longer stable life compared to liquid dye bath. Pigment can be used to make paint with a whole variety of natural and synthetic binders, as well as pastels, crayons, or oil sticks. I’ve also used home made pigment for applications like mixing into homemade playdough.

Note: this process works with adjective or “mordant” dyes that typically call for a fixative in dyeing textiles. To create an indigo pigment, a separate process that pays special attention to alkaline pH, oxidation & flocculant type is required. The entire process of making Indigo Pigment is covered in my Fresh Indigo + Pigment Extraction video Workshop

Alternative ingredient methods for making lake pigments are covered in my Extracting Color + Dyeing Fiber Video Workshop that can give opacity and/or different body and feeling to the pigment and resulting art material created.  The workshop videos cover the whole color making process including extracting dye, dyeing textiles and pigment making with the leftover dye baths- demonstrated in full detail in my dye studio.
